Turtles, Royalty of the BFS Pond

Hi, Turtle Families!
Here are some gems I pulled off my phone cam from the last few days at school.  Enjoy!

Here we are last Friday on our way to Dr. Seuss' 108th birthday party in SoHo.  We looked at some of his original art and were read Dr. Seuss books by an actress from Suessical the Musical and the Executive Director of Books for Kids, an awesome children's literacy non-profit (www.booksforkids.org).

We've been pretty serious about volcano construction this year.

Primi, Sadie and Andre enjoying "The Ghost Tractor," written by our own Karan Yerneni.

Nothing beats an all-school game of capture the flag!

Really?  Your kids are pretty cute together on the subway.

Hey, guys! Remember that time we tried to make buildings out of spaghetti and marshmallows?  Gross.

Karate and Pizza and Eggs, Oh My!

It's sure been a while since an update! Here are a few pictures of what's been going on with the Turtles at BFS.
Karate with Kate in some spiffy new gis!
We made pizza at our field trip to Nathan's house.
We're ready to drop our eggs from the top of the playground...

We had three survivors!  Next time maybe drop them from the top of BFS. Watch out below!

Awesome Autumn

Happy Almost-Halloween!

We had a jam-packed week at Brooklyn Free School.  There were our usual popular offerings: Karate with Kate, book group, math class, Tawni's Toolbox (art class), baking and wrestling and lots of special happenings.  Here are some things that stuck out.

Monday we said goodbye to Martin, a Turtle that will be going to another school.  We had a tea party in his honor and got to join him for a slice of basketball cake that some kids whipped up for him with Sarah.  We all signed a card and a basketball for him and had an appreciation at the end of the day.  He will be greatly missed!

We've been busy getting ready for our Parade on Halloween.  We've been practicing our hoola-hoops, making costumes and flags, and anyone who hasn't seen it yet should be preparing themselves for a pretty amazing dragon puppet.  These two pictures are of tail and tooth construction:

The Turtle Lounge has been story-central of late.  It's always a great place to cuddle up with a book, but this week we used it (without the lights) as our scary-story fort to tell our own spooky tales in the afternoons.

Wednesday is my favorite day: It's democratic meeting day, it's the day that the Turtles set up and clean up for lunch, but most importantly, it's GYM DAY!  Here's a picture of the Strength and Agility class Tawni led.  Afterward we had a very serious game of basketball, with some intensely cheerful cheerleaders.

On Thursday, BFS curriculum advisor Kathy McCullagh helped us publish stories that Turtles wrote.  We celebrated with a sparkling cider toast to the five authors that had something they were ready to share.

Friday a few of us took a really nice trip to the library around the corner.  Next Friday we'll head to the New York Public Library and Bryant Park for lunch.  All Turtles are invited, and parents are welcome too!

Have a great Hallo-weekend!  I hope to see you all on Monday at 1pm for the parade!

Today, in Turtle Land

Hi, Turtle Families!  Here are some pictures of things that happened at BFS today.

October has been very fashion forward at Brooklyn Free School.  There are some Turtles knitting, some crocheting, some designing clothes and costumes for our version of Project Runway and almost everybody thinking and talking about Halloween Costumes.  I even designed these goggles that make it really hard to see and really fun to play soccer!

Today we also had a guest hoola-hoop star, Mary Go-Round!  She showed us her stuff and let us play too.  We were pretty awesome at it.

This Friday Sarah is planning to take a trip to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and it's open to Turtles and Turtle parents that would like to come along!  Feel free to email me if you think you'd like to join them.

Also, remind your Turtle that any stories, poems or articles that they would like to have published need to be given to Kathy by Thursday so that we can have our book and publishing party next week.  Kathy will be typing them all up, so don't worry about spelling, just write!
